Demand for Home for Rental for Victims of Chinese Drywall

Posted in October 9th, 2009

Claims of flawed Chinese drywall have driven thousands of homeowners to look for any home for rental in order to protect themselves from the possible health hazards.

Senators from different states have even appealed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide emergency assistance to these unfortunate individuals, families and businesses.

Numerous Chinese drywall, which were imported from 2000 to 2008, were found to emit sulfuric gas that can cause damage to any home metal components. Health problems such as headaches, breathing difficulties and nosebleeds were also linked to the presences of these defective drywalls.

To date, about 1,500 complaints have already been recorded by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The complaints were from at least 27 states.

In the letter addressed to FEMA, Senators Bill Nelson (D-Fla), Jim Webb (D-Va), Mark Warner (D-Va) and Mary Landrieu (D-La) believe that federal resources should be utilized in order to help these families. The said agency was requested to reply by November 7.

Last April, Representative of D-Boca Raton, Robert Wexler, wrote Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida to ask him to announce a state of emergency so that local residents will be made eligible to receive relief from the federal agency.

Meanwhile, victims of the Chinese drywall are not only having problems with looking for a temporary home for rental to move into but also with their insurance carriers which are denying claims on the grounds that the contamination is not covered in standard home insurance policies.

This means that any repairs that need to be done in order to replace these tainted drywalls will be shouldered by the homeowners. To make matters even worse, some of the individuals who filed for repair claims were even informed that their insurance policy will not be renewed.

The demand for home for rental has been steadily increasing in Florida as the number of families losing their homes to foreclosure remains high. With this new problem, it is not surprising that there will even be more people looking for these rental properties.
